1467 Henry Sherman (1546-1610) was a Clothier and lived and worked in "Sherman's Hall", which is in Dedham, Essex, England. His father bequethed to him "my Shearman's crafte" and added, "I give to Henry Shearman, my son, all the household which is in his house which he hath already". Thus it seems he was already living and working in "Shearman Hall". And there he presumably lived and worked throughout his life. At age 23 he married Susan Lawrnece and they produced seven sons and four daughters. The fifth son, John, was the ancestor of Hon. Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence for Connecticut. Henry and his wife died within two weeks of one another, perhaps of the same malady. and their wills were probated on the same day, September 12, 1618. Both are buried at Dedham, England SHERMAN, Henry (I784)

1478 History of Solano and Napa Counties, California with Biographical Sketches of The leading men and women of the Counties, who have been identified with its growth and development from the early days to the present time., History by Tom Gregory and other well known writers., Illustrated ~ Complete in one volume, Historic Record Company, Los Angeles, California, 1912, p 471:
THOMAS ANDERSON GRIGSBY.
Not only through his lifelong residence in California is Judge Grigsby entitled to identification with the Native Sons of the Golden West, but his membership in Napa Parlor No. 62 gains added importance through the fact that he claims this as his native county. Among the people in whose midst his whole life has been passed he enjoys a personal popularity that indicates his fine qualities of mind and heart. Fair educational advantages were given him and ever since leaving school he has continued to be a close student of men and events, so that now he ranks among the best- informed men of his circle. Such broad knowledge could not have been secured, even with the aid of education, had it not been for his own native ability and keenness of mental faculties, which enable him to logically digest facts of importance and retain in his memory for future use records of dates, laws and bills not easily remembered by the bulk of the population.
Very early in the history of the American occupancy of Napa county Terril L. Grigsby came hither. A record of his activities in this county appears elsewhere in this volume. His son, Thomas Anderson, was born August 27, 1857, near Yountville, during the residence of the family on the old Occidental vineyard. Primarily educated in the common schools, he later had the privilege of studying at Napa Collegiate Institute under Prof. L. L. Rogers. With a desire to fit himself for commercial activities he entered Heald’s Business College at San Francisco and took a complete course of instruction, graduating with a high standing. While in the college he attracted the attention of other students and won the praise of his instructors through his fine penmanship, which then was and still remains a model of accuracy, neatness and skill.
Soon after his graduation from the business college Mr. Grigsby was appointed deputy county clerk under W. W. Collins and gave uniform satisfaction in the position. The books of the office furnish silent testimony as to his neat penmanship and unerring accuracy. When he left the office it was to fill a vacancy in the position of justice of the peace and his service under appointment was satisfactory to all. June 19. 1911, he took the oath of office and entered upon his duties as the regularly chosen incumbent of the department, since which time he has tried local law-suits and administered justice with an impartial mind and a keen intuition. In his work he displays a considerable knowledge of the law, gathered by habits of study and a fondness for following the development of larger cases in the upper courts, in which way he gathers a vast fund of information concerning legal matters.
The marriage of Justice Grigsby took place in Napa and united him with Miss Leah Grigsby, by whom he has one daughter, Leah Belle.
Mrs. Grigsby has been a lifelong resident of Napa and received a fair education in the city schools. Her father, Achilles F. Grigsby, a native of Tennessee, was a California pioneer during the memorable era connected with the discovery of gold. As early as 1850 he made his first trip to Napa. Three times he crossed the plains in the early days and on these trips he brought to California a number of thoroughbred horses from Kentucky, being one of the first to introduce such stock into the west, where eventually he became a prominent turfman. The infirmities of age obliged him to relinquish his stock interests and thereafter he lived in retirement until his death at the age of eighty-five years. Besides his identification with the Native Sons, previously mentioned, Justice Grigsby holds membership with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Politically he has been active in local Democratic affairs, promoting the welfare of the party organization through service in important capacities.

Journal Entries from our visit to Sutter’s Fort

Maria Isabella Gordon Coombs (3rd grader portrayal of Her)

My name is Maria Isabella Gordon Coombs. I was born in New Mexico about 1831 and came west with the Rowland-Workman Party in 1841. My father is a famous fur trapper and we traveled the southern route to California across Arizona. My mother’s name is Mary Jane Lucero Y Tapia Gordon and my aunts’ names are Rufina Lucero Alexander and Carmel Lucero Knight. I am the daughter of William Gordon who owns an important ranch and gathering place along Cache Creek/Yolo County. Before I turned 15, I got married to Nathan Coombs at Sutter’s Fort. Nathan and I became important residents of Napa County where we owned a large ranch. Nathan was a veteran of both the Revolution of 1845 and the Bear Flag Revolt.

The story about our wedding says that we were so poor, we had no shoes and had to share the same horse to get to the fort. Priests later discovered that I was married in a non-catholic ceremony and they wanted to charge Nathan $300 to recognize the marriage. Nathan and I refused to pay. We later became well off and had many children.

There is a Peter Henry Fick who is believed to be a son of Peter Fick and wife, Sarah. They were Loyalists who fled New York in 1783 to the northern part of Nova Scotia (which became New Brunswick).Due to harsh living conditions, the family left New Brunswick in the early 1800s and settled for a time in Catskill, New York before joining many other Loyalists in Upper Canada (Ontario)about 1813 or so. They settled in Walsingham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario.

"Soldier John" Grigsby, was born in 1720 in Stafford County. In 1740, "Soldier John" accompanied Lawrence Washington, brother of George Washington, to Carthagena (now in Columbia) as part of the Virginia militia under the command of Admiral Vernon. The expedition against the Spanish occurred during the administration of Governor Gooch. John Grigsby also commanded a company of Thirteenth Regiment of the Virginia Line during the early years of the American Revolution.[1]

In 1779, John Grigsby, his wife Elizabeth (Porter of Orange County), and other family members crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains into the Valley of Virginia. He was preceded to the Valley by his son James, from whom he purchased "460 acres in the Forks of the James River" on November 2, 1779.[1] When he arrived at "Fruit Hill" in Rockbridge, Co., VA, he was nearly 60 years of age and the father of 13 children. His last child, Reuben, was born there on June 6 of the following year. John Grigsby died April 7, 1794, and was buried in the cemetery of Falling Spring Presbyterian Church in Rockbridge Co., where the family worshipped. An historical marker at the church reads as follows:

FALLING SPRING PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

The Oldest Congregation in the Fincastle Presbytery, the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church, was organized before 1748. The Hanover Presbytery met here in October 1780. The present Gothic Revival church was constructed of slave-made brick during the Civil War. At the time of its dedication in April 1864, General Thomas L. Rosser's Cavalry Brigade was camped here. The first burial in the present cemetery was that of John Grigsby of Fruit Hill (1720- 1794).

In 1746, "Soldier John" married Rosanna Etchison, disposed of his holdings inherited from his father, Charles, in Stafford County, and moved with his young wife to Culpepper, Va. They had four (4) sons and one (1) daughter.

Rosanna died in 1762. In 1764, "Soldier John" married Elizabeth Porter; born 1734, died 1807. Elizabeth was buried in Falling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery. All of their children were born in Culpepper except Reuben, who was born at "Fruit Hill" in Rockbridge County.

from Henrietta Hamilton's book:
Many American families, particularly Virginians trace their descent from John Grigsby, whose ancestors were unquestionably of Welch origin, and who settled in this Country at a very early day, and were a potent factor in the social and intellectual development of the Communities in which they lived. As a people, they have been noted for their refined tastes, gracious manners, broadmindedness and liberality, and entire absence of anything like narrow clannishness, in religion or political matters, and for unswerving devotion to the interests of higher education.
The members of this family with which the present records deal, were two brothers, James and John, who emigrated to America about 1660, and settled in Stafford County Virginia where John Grigsby was born in 1720.
In the 1740s, John accompanied Lawrence Washington, in the forces of Admiral Vernon, on the expedition against Cartagena, South America, which was "one of the most important event of Gooch's Administration, as taken in connection with the other colonies, it was another step in the development of Union." See, "History of Augusta County", J. Lewis Peyton; and "Collections of the Virginia Historical Society," Volume IX.
Afterward he commanded a company in the thirteenth Regiment of the Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War. This information was obtained from the old war records in the archives at Washington. Owing to participation in this Colonial War and in the Revolutionary War, he was afterward known as Soldier John.

Tombstone reads:

"Pause, reader, here, and look with solemn dread
upon the last dwelling of the dead,
Through numerous graves appear on every hand
This was the first of all the Silent Band"

Hi mparker4 I cant read yr note clearly because it is flowing into the 'tips' section of the page for some reason - however - you may be correct - but I am curious about Jane Hamilton - we have a family 'rumour' that somehow we are connected to Admiral Lord Nelson - and in fact we have some Nelson memorabilia floating around in our family - a snuffbox, ceremonial sword, paintings etc - the family 'rumour' is that the connection is through Nelson's mistress Emma Hamilton - I would be fascinated if we could make that connection. Do you have any idea?? Gretchen Harris (nvanderknok3488)
I was born in Rugby Warwickshire, which is only abt 20 miles away from Market Harborough!! Gretchen
