This index was taken from Fort Wayne and Allen County, IN Area Obituary Index, 1841-1899, and not taken from the microfilm copies found in the Allen County Public Library's Genealogy Center. Meant to abstract information found in the obituary, the specific newspaper title, page number, and meaning of the date (death, obituary, probate, etc.) often are not indicated. Reasonable efforts will be made to locate and copy these obituaries, but the volunteers and staff of the Genealogy Center cannot guarantee that the original obituaries will be found.

This is probably not our William because the obit states he was of middle age and our William would have been 19

MICHAEL OATS is numbered among the best farmers and citizens of Johnson Township, his well-equipped farm being situated on section 9. He was born in Hampshire County, W. Va., December 21, 1825. His father, George Oats, was born and reared in Maryland. The date of his birth was 1785, and when he had arrived at a suitable age he was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Slonaker, who was born in West Virginia in 1793. The death of the father occurred in 1841, and his mother died some seven years later. They were the parents of nine children, in order of birth as follows: George, Polly, Christopher, Jonathan, Mary Jane, Silas, Sylvia, Michael and Margaret. Only two of the family are now living.
The subject of this sketch was employed in the usual manner of farmer boys until he had reached his sixteenth year. He then started out to earn his own livelihood, and for one year worked upon a farm for $6 per month. For the two years succeeding he received $9 per month. As this occupation did not appear to be very remunerative, he resolved to learn a trade, and chose that of a carpenter. For about three years afterwards ho worked at that occupation in Virginia. At this time he became convinced that he could better his fortune in the West, and in 1849 went as far Westward as Logan County, Ohio, where for three years he worked at his trade.
In the year 1852, Mr. Oats arrived in Christian County, having emigrated here in a covered wagon. He at once settled in Johnson Township, where he rented land and where he has been located ever since, engaged in farming and stockraising. His farm, which comprises some two hundred acres, is highly cultivated and well improved.
In November, 1864, Mr. Oats wedded Miss Harriet Shivers. Her father was born in Maryland, June 20, 1803, while her mother, who was also a native of the same State, was born in 1813. They were the parents of thirteen children, as follows: Thomas, a resident of Shelby County, Ill.; Jacob, who lives in Nebraska; Robert, whose home is in Ohio; Kate, wife of John W. Johnston, of Missouri; Sampson, who makes his home in Johnson Township; Washington C., who resides in El Dorado Springs, Mo.; Harriet, the wife of our subject; John W., now deceased; Matilda, deceased, who was the wife of J. B. Eaton; Delilah, wife of Dr. Lilie, of Raymond, Montgomery County, Ill.; Sallie, who is now Mrs. Ends, of Decatur; and Rebecca, the wife of William Black, of Edinburgh, Christian County. The parents came to this county in 1863, and here made their borne until claimed by death. They lie buried in the Anderson Cemetery.
To Mr. and Mrs. Oats has been born a family of nine children. Catherine, John Wesley and Nancy May are deceased and are buried in Anderson Cemetery; Dora and Charles live with their parents; Arthur is deceased; George, Cleveland and Bertie Leland complete the family. For many years our subject has been a member of the
234
Methodist Episcopal Church. He has served as a School Director and School Trustee and has also filled the position of Road Commissioner. By his manly and straightforward course in life he has won the friendship and confidence of his fellow-citizens, and is considered a worthy man in every sense of the word.

2739 The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 166 (October 2012):245-58 (Part 1), "The Earliest Shermans of Dedham, Essex, and Their Wives," "Part I: Henry Sherman the Elder and His Wives," by Michael Johnson Wood
GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY HENRY SHERMAN[64] was born about 1512,[65] perhaps in Essex. He settled in Dedham, Essex about 1534, and late in life in Colchester, Essex, about 1584. He died between 26 February 1589/90 and 25 July 1590 (dates of codicil and probate), probably in Colchester. His first wife, whom he married about 1539, was perhaps A DAUGHTER OF ROBERT PERPOYNT of Dedham. She was probably identical with AGNES, wife of Henry Sherman the elder, who was buried in Dedham 14 October 1580. He married next in Dedham 5 June 1581, MARION (___) (SMYTHE) WILSON, widow of Thomas Smythe of Dedham, then of Edmund Wilson of St. Leonard’s, Colchester, whom she had married in Dedham 5 April 1563 . She was perhaps "Mrs Sherman" buried at St. James, Colchester, 4 August 1584. Henry married last MARGERY ___, who was living when he made his will. As Henry Shearman the elder, of Colchester, Essex, he left a will dated 20 January 1589/90, with a codicil dated 26 February 1589/90, proved in London 25 July 1590.[66] The will named son Henry Shearman and his children Henry, Samuel, Daniel, John, Ezechiell, Phebe, Nathaniel, and Anne Shearman; son Edmonde Shearman and his children Edmonde, Richard, Bezaliell, Anne, and Sara Shearman (all under age; sons under 22, daughters under 21), son-in-law William Petfield and his children Richard, Susan, and Elizabeth Petfield (all under age); wife Margerye; son Robert; Jane and Anne Shearman, underage daughters of Robert [evidently the testator’s son Robert]; daughter Judith Petfield; son-in-law Nicholas Fynce; the wives of sons Edmond, Henry, and Robert; the poor of All Hallows [i.e., All Saints, Colchester]; and the poor of Dedham and the free school of Dedham (the testator asked to be buried in Dedham). Executors were to be sons Henry and Edmond. Children of Henry Sherman and his first wife (if Agnes was his second wife, she could have been the mother of at least one of the youngest children): i. ALICE SHERMAN, b. say 1540; bur. Dedham 20 Oct. 1580 as Alice, wife of Nicholas Fince; m. ca. 1562, as his first wife, NICHOLAS FINCE, b. after 25 Aug. 1532 (date of his father’s will), bur. Dedham 28 Feb. 1593/4, son of John and Ellen (___) Fince of Ardleigh, Essex.[67] Nicholas and Alice had seven children baptized in Dedham from 1562/3 to 1578. The burials of five in infancy or childhood are recorded there, and the other two children, Judith and Alice, may have died young also as they were not named in their grandfather’s will.[68] ii. JUDITH SHERMAN, b. say 1543, bur. Dedham 1 April 1601 as Judith, wife of William Petfield; m. Dedham 27 June 1566 WILLIAM PETFIELD, clothier, living in 1610,[69] probably the elder son of John Petfield of Earls Colne, Essex, clerk, whose undated will proved 17 June 1572, names also a younger son Matthew.[70] William and Judith had nine children baptized in Dedham from 1567 to 1588, the eldest being named Matthew. iii. HENRY SHERMAN, b. say 1545; m. SUSAN Lawrence. See Part 2. iv. EDMUND SHERMAN, b. say 1548; m. (1) ANN PELLETT; (2) ANN CLERE. See Parts 3 and 4. v. John Sherman, b. say 1551,[71] bur, Dedham 16 Oct. 1576, unmarried. He left an undated nuncupative will, probably proved in 1576.[72] The will mentioned brothers-in-law "William Pettfylld" and "Nycollas Fynce"; brother Robert Sharman; "my mother"; and "my father." vi. Thomas SHERMAN, b. say 1555; bur. Dedham 16 March 1563/4. Probably he was the godson of Thomas Butter, as discussed above. vii. ROBERT SHERMAN,[73] bp. Dedham 6 Feb. 1559/60; bur. St. Stephen Coleman Street, London, 14 Jan. l602/3.[74] He was educated at Cambridge University, and became a Fellow of the College of Physicians in 1599[75] He m. (1) Dedham 9 Dec. 1583 BARBARA BROWNE, bp. Dedham 1 April 1561, daughter of Martin and Katherine (Reynolds) (Warner) Browne;[76] (2) shortly after 4 July 1597 BRIDGET JENNEY, daughter of Francis and Margaret (Peyton) Jenney.[77] Robert’s will, dated 10 Jan. 1602/3, proved 20 Jan. 1602/3,[78] names wife Bridget; children Jane, Mary, Anne, and Robert; son Richard. Brother Henry Sherman was to be executor. Notes: 1. Among his many descendants, living and deceased, are several first-rate genealogists and editors of genealogical publications. 2. Bertha L. Henry’s 1589/90 will (see below) mentioned the children of his three sons and his daughter Judith, but did not mentioned any children of deceased daughter Alice Fince, who may have had two daughters alive when the will was made (see note 68 below). 63. Nicholas was named in the will of his brother John Fince dated 24 April 1559, no probate date (Emmison, "Essex Wills" [note 46], 250). 68. However, it is possible that Judith and Alice were named in the 1625 will of their first cousin, Ann (Sherman) Angier (see Part 3) as Judith Cartwright and "Allse Mase," widow, amongst beneficiaries known to be Ann’s relatives. 69. "Anna Petfield, daughter to William Petfield," was mentioned in the will of [her uncle] Henry Sherman, dated 21 August 1610 (see Part 2 of this article). 70. Episcopal Consistory Court of London, 164 Bullocke, at the London Metropolitan Archives. 71. John Sherman attended the Dedham Hall View of Frankpledge on 9 April 1572, so he had probably attained his majority since the previous View of Frankpledge for that court was on 1 October 1571 (Dedham Hall [note 16], DL30/60/739). 72. Note: It is not proven that he is the son of Thomas:
Henry was born in Colchester, County Essex, some thirty miles south of Yaxley. As fourth son of Thomas he received a relatively small share of his wealthy father's estate and thus had to abandon the life of landed proprietor and seek a new method of maintaining and increasing what he had. So he became a clothier. He carried on his trade in Dedham which is in County Essex a few miles north of his birthplace. Being on the River Stour only about 15 miles upstream from the important port of Harwich, Dedham may have been a better shipping point for the goods produced by the Sherman enterprise. The business occupied "Sherman Hall" which stands today as do numerous other ancient buildings of the Essex Clothiers. This Hall -still bearing our family name - is just across the street from Dedham's church and like many other old houses in the town, it boasts a charming Eighteenth Century facade added two centuries after the construction of the original Edifice.
Henry had 5 sons and 2 daughters. Their eldest son, Henry was our ancestor. The second son, Edmund, was the ancestor of General William Tecumseh Sherman. When Henry died in Dedham in 1590 at the age of seventy, his will left 1.20 to his son, Henry, and his armor to his sons, Henry and Robert (who was a physician) while Edmund, ancestor to a general, apparently had to go unarmed- or maybe he already had a full suit of his own. In any event, it is probable that all three sons armed themselves as best they could and rode down to the coast in July of 1588 to help repel the expected invasion by the dreaded Spanish Armada. But, thanks to Howard, Drake, Hawkins and the stormy seas, they had no need to unsheath their swords.

Line #1. _____ Johann Wendel Georg TRAUT (1689-1760) of Paradise Twp, near Strasburg, Lancaster, PA arrived Philadelphia 5 Sep 1738 on the ship "Winter Galley" from Kleinfischlingen, Südliche Weinstraße (near the free city of Landau), Electoral Palatinate, Holy Roman Empire (Strassberger - List #52; PTA-E.1). This is a very well-researched line that is perhaps best documented by Geo. E. Trout, 250 Year History Trout Family (Closson Press, Apollo, PA, 1991). Numerous bio-sketches of descendants in this line have been published in various local county histories. DNA Reference Line: Y-DNA Testing by well-documented descendants, Jerre Penn Trout 3rd and David Henry Trout, has resulted in double-validation of the Y-DNA Reference Line (signature Haplotype) for Line #1, and their 37-marker test results are posted below in turquoise-colored Match Cluster-B. Y-DNA testing has also now predicted Line #1 as being Haplogroup “R1b1b2.”; Accordingly, all (21) members of turquoise-colored Match Cluster-B in our study are now proven to be in some way directly related to Johann Wendel Georg TRAUT (1689-1760) of near Strasburg, Lancaster, PA.

In reply to: Re: Brethren Trout Line--early 1700s Trouts

You mentioned that your earliest known Trout ancestor was Michael Trout, born circa 1779 in Westmoreland Co, PA.You thought he might be Irish. In my opinion, it would be more likely that your Trouts were German.Trout derives from Traut, and they were from Germany.

To my knowledge, there were only one batch of Trouts in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania at or around the time you state your Michael Trout was born there. All of these Trouts stem from Johann Wendel George Traut (1689-1760), who married Appolonia Steinlin. They immigrated to America from Germany on 5 Sep 1738.One of their sons was named Michael Trout (1730-1780).

Michael Trout married Elizabeth Berger (1735-1775).I would guess that this Michael was the grandfather of your Michael Trout.Michael and Elizabeth Trout initially lived in the Strasburg Township of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They moved to the Bart Township of Lancaster Co, PA by at least 1756.Four of their sons subsequently moved to Westmoreland County, PA.I would assume that one of these men was the father of your Michael. A couple of them did have sons by the name of Michael, although none fit your 1779 date.Maybe there really was no "Michael" born in 1779 but the prominence of the grandfather's name somehow got mixed into the family history.I don't have any record of if any of the descendants went to Cambria Co, PA.

At any rate, their first son to go to Westmoreland County was Henry Michael Trout. He was born on 12 February 1757 in the Bart Township of Lancaster County, PA; he died in 1812.Henry served as an Ensign in the Revolutionary Army, and as a result, he received some land in Westmoreland Co, PA.He eloped with his new bride, Catharine Bossart (b. 17 Sep 1765; daughter of John and Catherine Bossart of the Hamilton Township near Chambersburg, PA), in June of 1782.They moved to the East Huntington Township of Westmoreland Co, PA.They had 12 children there, one of whom was named Michael Trout (1788-1822); he married Sarah Baker in 1819.Could this be your Michael?

Michael and Elizabeth's fourth son, George Trout, also moved to Westmoreland County.George was also born in the Bart Twp of Lancaster Co, PA in 1762; he died in 1829 in Perry Co, OH.He married Margaret Ziegler (b. 1771) in 1788, and at about that time, they moved to the South Huntington Twp of Westmoreland Co, PA.By 1812, they had moved to Perry Co, OH.However, before that time, they, too, had a son named Michael, who was born in 1809.However, this seems too late to be your Michael; furthermore, he moved to Ohio.

Another son named Philip, also born in the Bart Twp on 4 Apr 1765, moved to the Mount Pleasant Twp of Westmoreland Co, PA with his wife, Susanna Schroeder around 1788.They, too, had a son who they named Michael. He was born in 1803.Again, this was probably too late to be your Michael.

Finally, Michael and Elizabeth's last son to move to Westmoreland County was named Jacob. He was born on 3 Sept 1772 and moved to Westmoreland County some time after 1780.

All these sons had children. If your Trouts can be traced to Westmoreland County near about 1780, then my guess would be that they are somehow related to the aforementioned children or grandchildren of Michael and Elizabeth (Berger) Trout.

Good luck!

Sincerely,
N. Trout

My mother was Margaret E. Fick, daughter of Eston B. Fick, son of John E. Fick, son of Peter B. Fick, son of Frederick Fick and Elizabeth Becker.Frederick was the son of Peter Fick, who was born around 1743-47 in Prussia. Peter and his wife had: John, b. 1773 (married Catherine Countryman); Frederick b. 1775 (married Elizabeth Becker); Catherine and Mary, twins, born 1778; George, b. 1780 (marrried Hannah Brizzey); Peter Henry, bo. 1789; Harriet, b. 1788 (married John Dedrick); and Anthony, b. 1796(married Juliana McMichael). Peter came to U.S. along with his father, John Peter, on the "Patience and Margaret" on Oct. 25, 1748 (Captain John Govan). Peter settled in N.Y. but was a Loyalist during Rev. War; during the war he took his family to Nova Scotia. After the war he returned to N.Y. but soon left for Ontario, along with John, and Frederick . Went back to N.Y. for the families and settled in Walsingham about 1808. Hope this helps. Top of Form 1 Re: Walsingham Canada Ficks

It was great to hear from you so quickly! You and Murray are distant cousins, going back to your common grandfather, Frederick Fick. Thank you for the information you shared about Peter Fick's arrival in the U.S. with his father, John Peter, in 1748. Have you read The Long Point Settlers by R. Robert Mutrie? He is an authority on Norfolk County genealogy and has done extensive research. (His information can be found on states that Peter Fick came from Russia. (Not Prussia) "Joined the British Army and came to America with them during the Seven Years War. He settled in N.Y. and married his wife Sarah. During the American Revolution, Peter served in the Loyalist forces and then went to New Brunswick. After an interim period back in N.Y., they settled in Walsingham Township about 1813." I'm wondering if Prussia was at that time under the control of Russia. Do you know where he came from in Prussia? Do you have any further information about his father John Peter? Another helpful website that I have found with Fick genealogy is Thanks again, Gussie Fick

In 1902 they sold part of the farm and moved to St. Thomas where John was employed in the M.C.R.R. shops until his retirement. John was the grandson of Jonathan Doan, the founder of the Quaker Settlement at Sparta, Ontario. In her old age, Catherine Doan was badly crippled by arthritis and spent her last years in a wheel chair. They are both buried in Union Cemetery. They had 3 children.
