Vacations and interesting work trips
It’s been a very interesting, very busy summer, with virtually no time to get away to the hight country. But, I still had to go. I called Gregg after I saw his pictures from last weekend, and asked if he was interested in a quick trip to Guanella Pass. This trip is talked about all the time, and I highly recommend that nobody take it. It was like being in a parade. There were too many people in too many cars and barely any color. But we found some pictures anyway…
After almost 6 weeks away from home, I decided to take the truck up to the Continental Divide and play. I have been away so much this summer that I haven’t really made it to our natural Colorado playground at all this year.
Thursday, June 28th, 2007: As most of you know by now, I take a week long summer vacation every year to Lake Tahoe, generally in late June through the end of July. I have family in the area, and we spend quite a bit of time playing in or near the Lake, as well as hiking into the backcountry on the west side (up into Desolation Wilderness).
While generally entertaining (but unplanned by typical vacation standards) this year it got a little more “interesting” due to a forest fire.
South Lake Tahoe, close to Heavenly Valley and the casinos of South Shore, which means that we have to get our tired butts off the couch and go play at least once or twice this year.
As always, the future of Skiapooloza rests solely on the shoulders of some men who are getting more senile and creaky (that’s creaky, not cranky) by the year. We have lofty aspirations, and will always be able to ski the way we did when we were 25, to be on that first chair of the day, and on the last chair of the day.
Finally, after far too long out of the high-country, we got a group together and went on a camping trip to Monarch Park, just below Monarch Pass in South-Central Colorado (west of Salida on Hiway 50 for the “you need some cream with that” trip.
An old high-school friend, Ric Jones, and his family are moving from the Bay Area to the East Coast, and stopped by in Denver. Luckily I was “in town” that weekend, and got to see them. We all headed to St. Mary’s Glacier to play. Here’s my photo album from the trip.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more confusing….Mr. Hugh “Crash” Herndon will be joining us on our trip. He gets into town on Friday and leaves Wed morning. Whether he’ll ski the entire time or spend a good portion of it in ER or the coffee shop w/ his butt in a sling, only time will tell.Drew Bear will be joining us as well.
