Maria Isabella Gordon Coombs (3rd grader portrayal of Her)

My name is Maria Isabella Gordon Coombs. I was born in New Mexico about 1831 and came west with the Rowland-Workman Party in 1841. My father is a famous fur trapper and we traveled the southern route to California across Arizona. My mother’s name is Mary Jane Lucero Y Tapia Gordon and my aunts’ names are Rufina Lucero Alexander and Carmel Lucero Knight. I am the daughter of William Gordon who owns an important ranch and gathering place along Cache Creek/Yolo County. Before I turned 15, I got married to Nathan Coombs at Sutter’s Fort. Nathan and I became important residents of Napa County where we owned a large ranch. Nathan was a veteran of both the Revolution of 1845 and the Bear Flag Revolt.

The story about our wedding says that we were so poor, we had no shoes and had to share the same horse to get to the fort. Priests later discovered that I was married in a non-catholic ceremony and they wanted to charge Nathan $300 to recognize the marriage. Nathan and I refused to pay. We later became well off and had many children.

He was born in New Mexico, February 29, 1833; came to California with his parents in 1840, and Gordon Valley was named after his father. The subject of this sketch has a ranch of 1,200 acres, of which 200 are in grain and fruit; stock raising provides his income, principally horses, cattle and hogs. He married Julia Chapman in 1860, at Napa; she was born in Connecticut in 1840; their children are as follows: Safronia, 1861, who died 1897; George, 1854; Frank L.,1867; William H., 1982; Loretta, 1878; There are at Mr. Gordon's place many curious Indian relics, also an Indian burying ground. Frank L. Gordon lives with his father on the ranch; Mrs. Julia Chapman Gordon died in 1897, and Mr. Gordon married again in 1898, October 30th, Miss Alice A gosling, in Berryessa Valley.

When Joseph was 5 years old, his father brought his family across the plains to California on mule back. They located in Los Angeles, where his sister Margaret was born in 1840 or 41. Then to Yolo County. The first location of Joseph Gordon was inWashington, Yolo county and from there he went to Gordon grant, Cache Creek, same county, where he lived until 1872. On August 4 of that year he came to Gordon's valley and came into possession of nine hundred and twenty-five acres, of which ten are in vineyard, and it is his intention to plant thirty acres more to vineyard.
