- Elizabeth was the widow of William Blackmoer who was killed by the Indians at the settlement of Scituate. Elizabeth was a sister of John Curtis and was left a child's part in his will.
I'm still unclear about the marriage of William Blackmore and Elizabeth Banks. I thought I had it down patbased on the 1930 family history, THREE BLACKMORE GENEALOGIES, by Alvyn Smith, as follows:
William Blackmore [BLACKMORE EMIGRANT ANCESTOR] b. ca. 1636, England c. 10 OCT 1640, Northam, Devon, England m. 17 JUL 1666, Scituate, MA, Elizabeth Curtis d. 21 APR 1676, Scituate, MA William came from Northam, Devon, England, in 1665 to Scituate, MA at his uncle’s request tobe his (Peter Collamore’s) heir. He was killed by Indians and his house was burned during KingPhilip’s War. Prior to his death he had been freed from military duty because of the loss of aneye (1669). His house and barn were valued at 40 pounds. The inventory of his estate amountedto 61 pounds, 15 shillings, and 6 pence. Elizabeth Curtis was a widow when she married WilliamBlackmore. Her first husband’s surname was Banks. Following William’s death, she marriedJacob Bumpas (son of Edward and Hannah Bumpas) on 24 JAN 1677. They apparently hadthree sons--Benjamin (1678), Jacob (1680), and Ichabod (ca. 1682). Elizabeth Curtis wasprobably born in about 1640 to ------- Curtis and ------- Richarden. She had fourbrothers--William, Richard, Thomas, and John. [According to "Scituate, Massachusetts VitalRecords," there was a Richard Curtis who had the following children (but it is very questionable ifthis is Elizabeth’s father): Anna (12 MAY 1649), Elizabeth (12 JAN 1651), John (9 DEC 1653),Mary (9 JAN 1655), Martha (15 MAR 1657), Thomas (18 MAR 1659), Deborah (16 APR 1661),and Sarah (20 JUL 1663). There was also a Richard Curtis who married "Lydia" or "Ann" Hallettin 1649--her father being John Hallett, and his father being either John Hallett or Andrew HallettJr.] Elizabeth died sometime after 1687 probably in Rochester, MA. Children: (born Scituate, MA) (1) Peter; b. 25 MAY 1667; m1. Elizabeth -------; m2. Sarah Edwards; d. 17 APR 1717 (2) John; b. 16 DEC 1669; m1. 18 SEP 1700, Rochester, MA, Anna Branch; m2. 10 MAR 1725 {int.}, Rochester, MA, Sarah Norcutt; d. ca. 1751, Wareham, MA (3) Phebe; b. 12 AUG 1672; m. Ebenezer Holmes (4) William; b. 25 FEB 1675; d. 1698 (unmarried) The information listed above is based on Alvyn Smith’s book, THREE BLACKMOREGENEALOGIES; HOWEVER, another family historian has stated that William Blackmore marriedElizabeth Banks (Banks being her maiden name), the daughter of Richard Banks and ElizabethCurtis. Elizabeth Curtis, the mother of Elizabeth Banks, was the daughter of ------- Curtis and------- Richarden. Apparently, this may be proven by some Will; however, I have as yet beenunable to clear this up in my mind. Haven't seen the Will in question--Will of ElizabethBlackmore or Will of Elizabeth Bumpas? Which Elizabeth married Jacob Bumpas--an ElizabethCurtis Banks or an Elizabeth Banks Blackmore? Sorry, I'm confused! If anyone can enlighten me,please do so.
