The following is from a letter from Selma P. Altenbern of 552 Montgomery St. Napa, CA 94558 to the editor of "The Ashby Book" by Lee Fleming Reese:
John left Virginia for Missouri in 1835 and remained there 14 years. In St. Louis he married Maria L. Lewis in 1844 and they came overland to California, arriving 5 Aug 1849. No success at mining they moved to Sacramento. John was appointed assessor of Real Estate in Sacramento as well as many other city appointments.
Maria died 19 Jan 1862 during a big flood in Sacramento and her body had to be taken out by boat.
John owned, operated and lived in back parto of a store in town of Madison, Yolo County, California. In 1883 he was Justice of the Peace of Cottonwood Township, Yolo County, California (near Madison)He died 19 May 1900 and was buried by the Grand Lodge of Masons, Sacramento City Cemetery - beside his wife Maria. He never remarried, and they had no children. Maria had one son when they married.
John Ashby Tutt was 2nd Past Grand Master Masonic Lodge 1851 - 58 years in service of Free Masonry. (Taken from a letter from Mason Lodge to my uncle-I copied July 1971.)
