He was a lifelong resident of the Capay Valley and was born on Oct. 19, 1920. He retired from the Yolo County Department of Public Works in 1983 after 32 years of service. Maurice was a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army. He was the last surviving grandson of Capay Valley pioneers Joel and Emarine Wood, and the son of Elmer and Margaret Wood. Maurice is survived by his wife of 70 years, Peggy; son, Philip Wood and his wife Linda; and daughter, Carol Grein; grandchildren, Joel Grein and his wife Molly, Glori Gaffen, Darin Grien, Philip Jr., and John and his wife Megan. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Amanda and Aliece Grein, and Shelby and Brandon Wood. Maurice was preceded in death by a son, Fulton, in 1957; and a brother, Paul of Bakersfield. Graveside services are scheduled at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at the Capay Cemetery, 24727 County Road 22 in Esparto. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made directly to the Esparto Fire Department, PO Box 366, 16960 Yolo Ave., Esparto, 95627; or to an organization of the donors' choice.
