The following information came from a decendant: Sharon Randall
James' middle name was Edwin and he migrated to Australia on the ship "Panama" in 1854, assisted passage, which means that he was subsidized by the Australian Government. It seems there was a Caroline Randall on the same ship with James. Who was she? a relative?
James Randall married Ellen Moroney Corcoran, a catholic Irish widow who had a farm near Ballarat. (which is a large gold-mining area.) They had 6 children, but it was a rocky union and eventually they split up with James going to live with his son and Ellen stayed on the farm until eventually living with her son. The marriage certificate states that James parents were Thomas Randall and Elizabeth Benfield.
In an email, 12 Mar 2010, Sharon stated, "I believe that the Randalls originally came from a village called Mere near Warminster and Salisbury. I spent about 6 months living in Salisbury in my 20's but unfortunatley didn't realise I was on 'home turf'. I am planning a visit to the UK next year and can't wait to get the camera snapping."
On 22 Jan 2005, Sharon wrote:
" As I previously mentioned the butchering line has gone right through our family line in Australia (except for Dad). His father was a butcher by trade but insisted that all of his family (7 boys and 1 girl) had a decent education. Unfortunately for Dad, his oldest brother, (Dad is the second son), decided he wanted to be a priest which cut short dad's education by a couple of years. He is a brilliant man and would have made a fabulous lawyer, which is what he wanted but instead he joined the regular army, fought during WW2 and when he married, bought a grocery shop business in an affluent suburb in Melbourne. He is a self-made man, bought a liquor licence for the shop in the early 1960's, and went on to buy a lot of real estate and retired when he was only in his early 50's due to ill health. We have been lucky that Dad has been around for as long as he has! " ( Her dad was 88 in 2005 and in poor health from cancer.)
Sharon lives on a farm in the country in Victoria and her folks live about 1 1/2 hours away.
