Notes - Samuel Butterfield came first to Springfield and then to Saybrook. he was the brother-in-law of founder Matthew Mitchell. It was on Mr. Mitchell's property, on the east side of the river, that Samuel Butterfield was gathering hay one day in 1636, when a group of Pequots, who were hidden in the tall grass, kidnapped and killed him. The site was later called Butterfield Meadows.
