Capt Ashby took part in battles of Great Ridge/Bridge, Brandywine, and on 18 Mar, 1776 he was Wounded at Germantown 4 Oct 1777, resigned 30 Oct 1777. He was a Major in the Virginia Militia 1780-81, and was listed as an invalid 1781. (See Revolutionary War Records; also DAR Patriot Indes, Washington, DC, 1966 P20., VA. Doc. 31 pp 3-16. On 13 Apr 1838 by executive order of the State of Virginia additional land bounty was given the heirs of John Ashby for his services as a Captain in the Continental line, Revolutionary War. His name remains in Mineral County, West Virgini at Fort Ashby where he was particularly active. will dated 18 Jan 1812, Will proved 28 Aug 1815 "The Ashby Homesteads in Upper Fauquier County, Virginia", Author Unknown to Compiler Greenland; The home of Captain John Ashby. It was inherited by his son Marshall Ashby and was the birth place of the latter's son, General Henry Marshall Ashby. Colonel Turner Ashby and his wife were buried a short distance north of the house.
