John married Elizabeth Thorne by 1680 in Woodbury or Stratford, Connecticut, or in Flushing, New York.[1]

Deacon John Sherman
John5 (Samuel, 4 Edmond,3 Henry,2 Henry,1) was born in Stratford, Conn, Feb 8 1651, and was a deacon in the Congregational church. On the occurrence of a difference in regard to the minister, he led a party which left and settled the town of Woodbury, Conn, where he held a controlling influence. He was townclerk 25 years, and captain of militia. A man of intelligence, energy and ability, his influence was felt throughout the colony.
He was a judge 44years, representative 17 sessions? And speaker of the assembly in 1711-12; so that he may very appropriately be called a pillar of the state. By his wife, Elisabeth, he had:

LeRoy married Elizabeth Nevill July 26, 1868 in Laclede Co., MO. Elizabeth was b: abt 1852 in KY d: March 6, 1885 Laclede Co., MO. Children: Mary Alice, James Wiley, Laura Jane, Ida May, Margaret Belle, Marion Alfred, William G., Elmer Silas and one unnamed. If anyone knows where Elizabeth Nevill Brownlow is buried please let me know. Thanks

2nd Marriage Dec. 15, 1887 in Springfield, Greene Co., MO to Rebecca Ellen Cook B: Jan 6, 1869 D: Jan. 5, 1953, Springfield, MO. Children: Susan Elizabeth, Florence Lee, Gracie, Walter Elby, John Oscar, Sherman LeRoy, Bertha, Verna Opal, Helen Lois and one unnamed.

LeRoy served in the Civil War 1862-1865 with the Union. He was a shoe maker in Springfield. He died of Chronic organic heart trouble at age 67 yrs. 6 mos. 26 days. He is my paternal ggrandfather.

LeRoy's brother Elby L. went to serve with the Confederates, and was not heard from after 1863.

James ( Joe) Sherman Feburary 24, 1976 Manton- James ( Joe) Sherman, 63 of Fife Lake died Tuesday morning at Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital. He had been Ill several months.He was born Nov 8, 1912 in Oscoda and grew up in Utica. He moved to the Manton area in 1932 and married Lora Barnes June 29 1935. During WWll, he worked in Auburn Heights, coming to the Arlene area in 1945. He has lived in Fife Lake since 1964. Mr sherman retired last year from his job as a custodian for Manton Consolidated Schools. He was a member of the Manton Baptist Churchfor 20 years and the Fife Lake Baptist Church for the past 11 years. he served on the positions of decan, trustees and other offices at both churches. Surviving are his wife: one son James M of Buckley: three daughters, Mrs Monie ( Norma) Shafer of Portland, Mrs Cecil ( Beverly) Yager of Coleman, and Mrs Lynn (Donna) Foxworthy of Manton, his mother Zoey sherman of Lakeview Manor, two brothers Clayton and Bacil of Manton. one sister Elizabeth Irby of Manton. 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 am at Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton. Rev Robert Stacy will officiate. Burial will be in the Caldwell twp Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home begining 7 pm this evening
