1516 | http://www.geni.com/surnames/campbell Campbell Genealogy and Campbell Family History Information About the Campbell surname It was Sir Cailein Mor Campbell's grandfather Dugald on Lochawe who is said to have been the first given the nickname "Cam Beul" since he apparently had the engaging trait of talking out of one side of his mouth. Cam beul means curved mouth in the Gaelic. This Duncan was so much loved by his family that they took his nickname as their family name and held to it even beyond Argyll. The spelling of the surname (family name) was originally Cambel. Then when Robert the Bruce's son King David came to the throne as King of Scots he brought with him a number of Norman knights to whom he gave lands in an attempt to introduce Norman efficiency in administration. David had been at the English court and admired the Norman system of feudalism. The use of the spelling "Campbell" may perhaps have been as a result of Norman rather than Gaelic scribes attempting to write the Gaelic name. The name Cambel was first used by the family in the 13th century. The first chief of the clan to appear on record as "Campbell" may well have been Sir Duncan of Lochawe when he was created Lord Campbell in 1445. It is interesting to note that Einar Sigurdsson, Earl of Orkney (died 1020), was also called Einar Wry-Mouth. One possible modern medical explanation is a form of Torticollis (from the Latin torti, meaning twisted, and collis, meaning neck), or "wry neck", a condition in which the head is tilted toward one side (cervical rotation), and the chin (mouth) is elevated and turned toward the opposite side (cervical extension) thereby producing a "Cam beul" or curved mouth in some cases This ancient Scottish name has its origins in a Gaelic nickname "Caimbeul", meaning "wry (or crooked) mouth", from "dam", bent or crooked, and "beul", mouth. That it was originally a nickname can be seen by a charter of 1447, which records Duncan le Cambeli, the first Lord Campbell, the "le" being the Scottish "lie", meaning "so called", or "known as". A sizeable group of early European surnames were gradually created from the habitual use of nicknames. These were given in the first instance with reference to occupation, or to a variety of characteristics, such as physical attributes or peculiarities, mental and moral characteristics, supposed resemblance to an animal's or bird's appearance or disposition, or to habits of dress. Clan tradition has it, that the Campbells were originally known as "Clana Duibhne" or "O'Duine", from one Diarmid O'Duine of Lochow. About 1390, Duncan Campbell witnessed a charter by Duncan, Earl of Levenax, and is believed to be the first namebearer to introduce a "p" into the name, influenced by the erroneous theory that "Cam(p)bell" comes from the Norman-French "de Campobello" i.e., "of the beautiful plain". Campbell is the family name of the hereditary Dukes of Argyll, dating from 1445, and their Coat of Arms is described thus: "Quarterly, first and fourth, gyronny of eight gold and black, the Crest being a boar's head couped gold". The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Gillespic Cambel, which was dated 1263, in the "Exchequer Rolls of Scotland", during the reign of King Alexander 111 of Scotland, 1249 - 1286. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling History And Origin 1. Scottish: nickname from Gaelic cam ‘crooked', ‘bent' + beul ‘mouth'. The surname was often represented in Latin documents as de bello campo ‘of the fair field', which led to the name sometimes being ‘translated' into Anglo-Norman French as Beauchamp. 2. In New England documents, Campbell sometimes occurs as a representation of the French name Hamel. Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, Inc. © 2006 Patrick Hanks •Immigration Records: 5,479 Campbells found Campbell is a Gaelic surname of two separate origins. One comes from the family name of a Scottish clan, see Clan Campbell.A separate surname comes from Mac Cathmhaoil meaning son of the battle chieftain . Within the United States, it is ranked as the 46th-most common surname.U.S. Census Bureau; Frequently Occurring First Names and Surnames From the 1990 Census, (Table) Name Files dist.all.last; published May 9, 1995; Notable persons named Campbell Several people named Alexander Campbell Several people named Alistair Campbell Several people named Andrew Campbell Several people named Archibald Campbell Several people named Bruce Campbell Several people named Carol Campbell Several people named Charles Campbell Several people named Colin Campbell Several people named Dave Campbell Several people named David Campbell Several people named Donald Campbell Several people named Duncan Campbell Several people named Edward Campbell Several people named George Campbell Several people named Glen Campbell Several people named Gordon Campbell Several people named Graeme Campbell Several people named Gregory Campbell Several people named Ian Campbell Several people named Jack Campbell Several people named James Campbell Several people named Jim Campbell Several people named Jimmy Campbell Several people named John Campbell Several people named Joseph Campbell Several people named Julia Campbell Several people named Ken Campbell Several people named Kevin Campbell Several people named Mary Campbell Several people named Michael Campbell Several people named Neil Campbell Several people named Patrick Campbell Several people named Phil Campbell Several people named Philip Campbell Several people named Robert Campbell Several people named Roy Campbell Several people named Scott Campbell Several people named Steven Campbell Several people named Thomas Campbell Several people named Timothy Campbell Several people named William Campbell Military and politics Aileen Campbell, member of the Scottish Parliament Alastair Campbell, British political editor and spokesman Colonel Alexander Campbell of Possil a British soldier Bill Campbell (California politician), American politician Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde, a British soldier Colin Campbell (Scottish politician), Member of the Scottish Parliament Epsy Campbell Barr, Presidential Candidate in Costa Rica Frank Campbell, NYS Comptroller 1892-1893 General George Carter-Campbell a Scottish soldier Gordon Campbell (Canadian politician), Premier of British Columbia Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, Prime Minister Jack M. 1541 | I believe Catherine, who married Timothy Parker, was the daughter of Michael Trout, because John Westbrook was , made guardian of Michael's 3 daughters; Margaret, Helen and Catherine, in 1837. just before Catherine's marriage. John Westbrook lived next to Timothy in the 1840 Census in Licking County Ohio. Timothy Parker's mother was Abigail Westbrook. I believe John Westbrook to be related to her . Michael Trout was married to Sarah Baker. She later married John Westbrook as Sally Trout. Timothy and Catherine Parker moved to Powesheik County, Iowa. Catherine Trout's sister married Edward Griswald in 1841 in Powesheik County, Both of them and Sarah and John Westbrook are buried in Dresden Cemetery in Poweshiek County, Iowa. "Yolo Weekly Mail", Friday, 15 Feb 1895, (Woodland newspaper, Yolo Co. archives): "Mrs T J Parker, mother of O E Parker, is dangerously ill at her home on Court St. She is suffering from heart trouble." Obit from "Yolo Weekly Mail", Tues, Feb 26, 1895, pg 7: "Mrs. Catherine T. Parker died yesterday forenoon at the home of her son, Oscar E. Parker on Cort St. For the past five years the aged lady has been an invalid. Recently her health failed rapidly, and she could not survive an attack of lagrippe, with which she bravely struggled the past two weeks. Deceased was a native of Ohio, and at the time of her death was aged 75 years, 1 mo, 11 days. She has been a resident of Yolo County for the past 25 years. A family of four sons who mourn her loss are: JR of Hungry Hollow, OE of Woodland, Hiram L of Kings Co, JM of Vacaville. The remains will be shipped to Vacaville, and the funeral held at that place at 10 am today." Obit "Woodland Daily Democrat", 25 Feb 1895: "Death of a Good Woman, Mrs Catherine Parker passes away peacefully and Serenely. Mrs. Catherine Parker died at the residence of her son, O E Parker on Court street, at 11:30 am Sunday. The immediatecause of her death was pneumonia, but she had been afflicted with paralysis for five years, and had been unable to walk for more than a year. The deceased is native of Ohio and 75 years, 1 month and 10 days old. Her husband preceded her to the grave about a year ago, and he was buried in Vacaville, after which they made their home in Yolo county. She leaves four sons,m JR Parker, of Hungry Hollow, O E Parker of Woodland, H L Parker of Kings county, and J M Parker of Vacaville. Mrs. Parker had been a devout member of the Christian church for more than fifty years. She was a woman of gentle and lovable disposition and exemplary character, and her death will be profoundly regretted by all who knew her. The body will be shipped to Vacaville on Tuesday for interment." Katy died from Heart problems and Grippe. The question was: whose father was the Catherine Trout who married Timothy Parker in 1837 in Licking County Ohio. I believe Catherine Trout, who married Timothy Parker, was the daughter of Michael Trout and Sarah Baker. John Westbrook was made guardian of Michael's 3 daughters; Margaret, Helen and Catherine Trout, in 1837. just before Catherine's marriage to Timothy Parker on May 28, 1837.. Michael Trout died in 1822, and there is a marriage of a John Westbrook and Sally (a nickname for Sarah) Trout in Licking County, Ohio, 12 March 1825. I could not find John Westbrook in the Ohio 1820 census. He might have been living with his parents. I could not find Michael Trout in the 1810 Census in Licking County Ohio but found a Henry Trout, ( Henry is thought to be Michael’s father), in the neighboring county, Fairfield, in the 1806 tax list. John Westbrook lived next to Timothy in the 1840 Census in Licking County Ohio. He had 2 males under 5, 1 male 40-50, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 30-40. Timothy Parker and John Westbrook were also neighbors in the 1850 Census in Licking County, Ohio and Timothy’s mother, Abigail, is living with him. Abigail’s maiden name was Westbrook. In the 1850 Census there is an Ephraim and Sarah Baker living next door to Timothy and Catherine Parker. It is possible that he is Sarah Baker,/Trout/Westbrook’s brother. Ephraim is 51 and Sarah Westbrook is 49. Although the marriage record states John Westbrook married Sally, In the 1850 through 1870 Censuses, John Westbrook’s wife is listed as Sarah. In the 1960 Census both the Timothy Parker family and the John Westbrook families have moved to Iowa within 30 miles or so of each other. Timothy in Poweshiek County and John in neighboring Iowa County. Before 1870 Timothy had moved tp California and John remained in Iowa. He and Sarah were buried in Poweshiek County. I also believe it was Catherine Trout’s, sister, Helen, who married Edward Griswold in Licking County, Ohioon Sep 27, 1841 and are listed in the 1856 Iowa Census in Poweshiek County. Both Edward and Helen Griswold are buried in the same cemetery as John and Sarah Westbrook. Timothy Parker's mother was Abigail Westbrook. I believe John Westbrook to be her brother. I have not proved this information. However, I believe with all of this related documentation, that the Catherine Trout who married Timothy Parker and the Helen Trout who married Edward Griswold are the daughters of Michael and Sarah Baker Trout . I have not found Margaret Trout’s marriage yet. https://familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=https://api.familysearch.org/records/pal:/MM9.1.r/937G-T5L/p4 Ohio, County Marriages, 1790-1950 for Michael Trout (family search.org) Name: Michael Trout Titles & Terms: Event: Marriage Event Date: 04 Feb 1819 Event Place: Licking, Ohio Spouse: Sarah Baker Reference Number: v1,p.84 Film Number: 384300 Digital Folder Number: 4257844 Image Number: 439 https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=https://api.familysearch.org/records/pal:/MM9.1.r/MXZF-42V/p8 Ohio, County Marriages, 1790-1950 for Sally Trout (Sally is often another name for Sarah) Name: John Westbrook Titles & Terms: Event: Marriage Event Date: 12 Mar 1825 Event Place: Licking, Ohio Spouse: Sally Trout Reference Number: v.1,p.196 Film Number: 384300 Digital Folder Number: 4257844 Image Number: 496 The probate records of Licking County: pg 90 - 24 May 1837-show Michael Trout, deceased.
