Thank you for responding.George Smith Collis was my paternal great grandfather, I am trying to find out more about his offspring other than my paternal grandfather (Edwin Martin Collis, born 1877 and paternal great aunt (Annie Grace Dyrenforth).I believe there was another brother (half) - E.G. George Collis? but I have no other information regarding this.

http://www.gyford.com/domesday/
Five mills are mentioned in this area at Domesday; these would all have been watermills, windmills not being found in England until about 100 years later. The River Brain runs through the area from north to south, to join the larger Blackwater in the south-east of the area.

Like woods and meadows, the watermills were retained by the lord of the manor. This was because of the profit to be made from their essential function, in this case grinding corn.

In later records we know of only three such mills in Witham parish. Only one of these still has an actual mill building today, namely Blue Mill or Machins Mill, on the Blackwater (this probably belonged to either Blunts Hall or Benton Hall at Domesday). The two other survivors are now only represented by mill houses, at Chipping Hill (no.1 Powershall End), and Newland (Old Mill House, Guithavon Valley). This last eventually belonged to the 13th century settlement of Newland, and may not have been present at Domesday.

Thus there were either two or three Domesday mills that did not survive many centuries. This is a common feature, many mills being recorded at Domesday in places where there is now only a relatively small watercourse, for instance at Faulkbourne and Fairstead, upstream from Witham on the River Brain.

Obituary (Eureka Mirror) 26 Mar 1937
Richard (Dick) Smith, an old time resident of this district, passed away Sunday night at the Libby hospital where he had been taken for treatment.
Mr. Smith was one of the outstanding characters in this neighborhood and spent most of time fighting conditions which he believed to be wrong. Many stories are told of his early day battles with the lumber and public officials.
Funeral services were held yesterday morning from Gumpfs Funeral home with Rev Fred A Datton of the full Gospel Church officiating.

Richard Smith was born about 1860 in Canada. He was listed in the Michigan 1894 census as a carpenter. It is said that in Montana he was a bricklayer, then a ditch tender of the irrigation ditch and that little by little he lost most of his land through lawsuits he initiated. It is also said that he was ornery, but Bertha remembers him as kind to her. After Libby died and Dick got old, he moved to town with one of their old neighbors and some one took what they wanted out of the house and it was burned to the ground. So nothing was left." "When Dick was buried, I was surprised as he was a real good looking man. He always wore a mustache and the undertaker shaved it off. The reason he wore a mustache, he had a big birth mark on his upper lip. And he was so clean." Richard Smith died in Eureka, Montana.

1230 Everett was the 2nd child of Freeman and Ora May Loranger Parker. He was born 14 May 1911 in Yolo County.

As a youth Everett had terrible night mares and often would sleep walk. He and his brothers slept in a screened porch. He would get up in his sleep and walk through the screen and out into the orchard. One day his dad followed him trying to get him back in bed. Everett climbed under the truck, scraping his back. Afraid to shout and startle Everett, Freeman grabbed him by the nightshirt and took him back. When the family went camping, Everett would have to sleep in the back of the tent with all the family sleeping between him and the door. He still managed to step over all of them in his sleep to go for a walk. He had rheumatic fever as a youth and was left with a heart murmur. He also had a stuttering problem when young. He was very active in High School sports, and enjoyed participating in musical and drama productions. As a new husband, Everett worked at a service station in Vacaville when Ron was born, about 1934. He worked on the Central Valley Project during the depression years. When he and Elinor first married they had an almond orchard located west of Esparto, on Highway 16., across from his fathers. In the 40's they moved into town, where he operated a station and did hand-grooved tire recapping. He later built the first Texaco Service Station, and later a Chevron Service Station, on the corner across from Wyatt's store, on the old Hotel site. Ron and Ross picked up many bricks from the old hotel while cleaning up the property. Both boys worked in the Chevron Station and the almond orchard during their high school years. A little kitchen was on one end of the station, where hamburgers were sold. Gasoline, lubrication, tire repair and minor mechanical repair were services offered.
Elinor and Everett moved to the corner of Highway 16 and Main Streets, in the earky 1950's, where they raised almonds, walnuts, and peaches. Everett's last job was as Yolo County Purchasing Agent in Woodland, along with being an almond farmer. He died from chronic Nephritis at age 53. He is buried Capay Cemetary, Esparto, Yolo, CaliforniaHe had been ill for about 3 years. He had been an active member of the local Masonic Order, being a Past Master.
