Lewis was dead a year at that time. Someone else must have been running the hotel, with the ownership still listed under Lewis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Census of 1860 in Van Buren shows Lewis and Ann (Anna?) living with no children. [This would be Lewis's second wife Ann.] Scrolling down the page yields a Johichum Spawn, age 19, living with their neighbor Timothy MCody with 2 other teens, and he is working as a miller. Since his second wife did not receive any inheritance when Lewis was killed in the Civil War (ex. Belleville Inn) and she is not buried with every other Spaun, did she in fact send the children out of the house? More About LEWIS SPAUN: Died 2: June 27, 1862, Prince William County, VA109 Burial: On field at Bull Run, VA, monument in Soop Cemetary, lot#384, Van Buren Twp., Mich110 Military service: September 12, 1861, Enlisted in US Army, Co. Of interest, however, is when it talks of his reminiscences of his early days. It says, "His parents were brought to Belleville by the Indians, which was the birthplace of Mr. [James] Spawn. His mother was of Indian descent, while his father was of Dutch origin, and he is pleased to have the distinction of having his first bath given him by an Indian squaw." Looking at the lineage for Ann Marie, the possible Indian heritage would probably be from Annautery Veder's ancestors or Frederick Schoonmaker's ancestor's, as I have not traced these lines yet. Notes for HENRY SPAUN: From compilations of Margaret Barlow get the following excerpts: Henry Spawn enlisted for the Civil Was as a bugler when he was sixteen with Co. B, 14 Reg't, Michigan Infantry, mustered out at Louisville, KY, July 18, 1865. He was in Sherman's march to the sea. His captain wanted him to stay with him because he was so young, but he chose to go into battle. After the war, he went West on the Chisholm Trail, hoping the open air would cure his asthma. Spent some time driving Texas cattle. For three years he never saw a white woman. He felt comfortable with the Indians and found them to be a trustworhty race of people. The Osage Indians were cruel though. There was ano law where he was, so it was not uncommon to awaken in the morning to find a man hangin. Not a word was said as to who did the deed. This was the way horse thieves and undesirables were gotten rid of. Showed up at the time of Margaret Barlow's wedding in Detroit in 1922. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Michigan in the Civil War site at http://www.geocities.com/~micivilwar/cwmireg.htm on 06/19/2000 lists: 14th Michigan Infantry COMPANY B OFFICERS RANK NAME HOME AGE Captain Fitzgibbon, Thomas C.
