2531 Served in US Congress 1855-1861, US Senate 1861-77, Secretary of US Treasury 1877-81, US Senate 1881-97, and became Secretary of State in 1897. No children. SHERMAN, John (I543)
 
2532 Served with the Culpeper Minute Men first and later was appointed Captain, 3rd Virginia Regiment, Revolutionary Way. Capt Ashby took part in battles of Great Ridge/Bridge, Brandywine, and on 18 Mar, 1776 he was Wounded at Germantown 4 Oct 1777, resigned 30 Oct 1777. He was a Major in the Virginia Militia 1780-81, and was listed as an invalid 1781. (See Revolutionary War Records; also DAR Patriot Indes, Washington, DC, 1966 P20., VA. Doc. 31 pp 3-16. On 13 Apr 1838 by executive order of the State of Virginia additional land bounty was given the heirs of John Ashby for his services as a Captain in the Continental line, Revolutionary War. His name remains in Mineral County, West Virgini at Fort Ashby where he was particularly active.

Greenland; The home of Captain John Ashby. It was inherited by his son Marshall Ashby and was the birth place of the latter's son, General Henry Marshall Ashby. Colonel Turner Ashby and his wife were buried a short distance north of the house.

" To son Samuel Ashby half of tract of land on Horner's Fork containing by patent 800 acres, also a tract of land containing 200 acres adjoining a tract of 500 acres entered in the name of John Marshall, near the Kentucky River, both these tracts being in Kentucky, also a tract of land in the Manor of Leeds which I purchased from Daniel Routt.
To son John Ashby tract of land lying on waters of Horner's Fork of Licking in Kentucky, also tract of land in Manor of Leeds purchased from John Adams.
To daughter Martha Ann Withers negro after her mother's death.
To daughter Dolly Jones negro also loan of two negroes during her life, and afterwards to her children.
To daughter Elizabeth Tutt, negroes.
To three daughters above mentioned a tract of 1,000 acres on north fork of Licking in Kentucky to be equally divided.
