According to Savage (information via Leslie Griffith Jacoby), "Matthew came to Charlestown MA in 1635 with Rev. Richard Mather in the ship "James" of Bristol. Removed to Concord and soon to Springfield (signed Compact with Pynchon and others May 1636), soon after to Saybrook where in Pequot War he was protected by Lyon Gardiner, but says Indians took one of the "old Man's sons and roasted him alive." In 1639 he was in Wethersfield, CTY, next year he was the town clerk, but soon went to Stamford and in 1643 with Richard Denton he went to Hempstead, Long Island. He returned to Stamford, where he died 1645/6. He was a colonial representative in 1637. Savage apparently lists only three known children: Susannah, David and Jonathan.
