!NOTE: Samuel Sherman came to Boston from England in June of 1634 when he was about 14 years of age. He went with father to Watertown, Massachusetts, and remained there a couple of years. He came to Wethersfield, Connecticut probably in 1636 for the following May he was one of the committee, who before the General Court was organized, which declared war against the Pequot Indians, he being then but 19 years of age. He married, probably at Wethersfield, Sarah, daughter of Mathew Mitchell, and sister of the Rev. Jonathan Mitchell, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, probably in the year 1640. He then to moved to Stamford, and finally settled in Stratford, now Bridgeport, Connecticut, before 1656. He was an Assistant or Member of the General Court in 1662, 1663, and 1664, and in 1665 he was appointed one of a committee of sixto watch and guard the coast, as a war committee, if the Dutch fleet should make its appearance, as expected, from Stratford to Rye. It is probably for his services in the General Court that he received from the General Court in October, 1664, 250 acres of land, which were finally located in Stratford, nearly opposite Derby Landing. He became possessed of a large quantity of land in Stratford, all of which nearly, he gave to his children before his decease, and he removed from Stratford village to the home of one of his sons on the Toilsome road near the Second Stratfield meetinghouse. In a writinf dated Nov. 9, 1685, he says, "I Samuel Sherman, Senr., now of Fairfield" showing that he was then living on the west side of the Toilsome road in the town of Fairfield. He died at that place, according to his grave-stone inscription, a facsimile of which is here given.

    Biography
Hon. Samuel Sherman came from Dedham with his father Edmund, who died at New Haven, Conn., 1641.[citation needed]
HON. SAMUEL SHERMAN was baptized at Dedham, Essex, England on July 12, 1618. (Reg. 50, p. 416.)[1] He migrated with his parents, Edmund and Grace (Makin) Sherman,[1] and several siblings in 1635[1] when he was about 17 years old.[1]His brother, Rev. John Sherman had arrived in 1634.[1]Other brothers Edmund and Richard remained in England, sister Joan may have married Henry Wright of Dedham, Mass., and sister Hester married in England to Andrew Ward and they came to New England in 1633. Another sister Grace married John Livermore.[1]

Samuel was briefly at Boston, [citation needed] Watertown, Massachusetts, went from there about 1636, to Wethersfield.[1] Afterwards at Stamford until about 1650, then Stratford, and finally in 1685 to the area in Stratfield which was in Fairfield, Connecticut.[1]

In about 1640[1] at Wethersfield,[1] Samuel married Sarah Mitchell[1] (daughter of Matthew and Sarah (Butterfield)Mitchell and sister of Jonathan Mitchell, of Cambridge, a Fellow of Harvard College).[1]She was bap. at South Owram, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, Oct. 14, 1621[1] and came to New England with her parents, Matthew and Susan (Wood) Butterfield) Mitchell[1] and six siblings[1] on the James,[1] landing on August 17, 1635[1] and settling in Charlestown.[1]Sarah's maternal uncle was Edmund Wood.[1]Her sister Hannah married Robert Coe.[1]

He was a leading man in New Haven Colony, a conspicuous member of the Church and an Assistant from 1662 to 1667.[1] In 1637 he was on a Wethersfield committee that declared war on the Pequots;[1]and fought in the Pequot campaign in 1637.[1]He was deputy from Stratford to Connecticut Legislature, October 1660;[1] one of the purchasers of land from the natives for the parish of Stratfield in 1661;[1]An assistant to Connecticut Colony, October 1662, 1663-1667. [1]He was elected magistrate of the new Connecticut Colony in January 1664/5.[1] In 1665 on committee to assist in putting the colony in a posture of defense against the enemy (the Dutch) from Stratford to Rye.[1]He was on a list of Freemen at Stratford on October 7, 1669; and served on a committee appointed to assign seats in the new meeting house.[1]He served as commissioner for Stratford 1671-1675, for Stratford and Woodbury 1676-1679; for Stratford 1680-1684, and for Fairfield 1685-1688.[1]He placed his signature on the articles of agreement for the settlement of Woodbury in 1672 but probably did not move there.[1]In September 1692 he was one of the grand jurors who indicted Mercy Disborough on charges of witchcraft.[1]

Samuel was described as a "large land owner" and he was a community leader. In ancient deeds he is referred to the "Worshipful Mr. Sherman."

He was the father of Captain and Judge John Sherman, of Woodbury, Conn., who was speaker of the Connecticut General Assembly, Assistant and Judge of Probate and Judge of the County Court. Their descendants included General William Tecumseh Sherman and United States Senator and Secretary of State, John Sherman.[2]

Sarah died after April 15, 1665 at the birth of their last child. Samuel died at Fairfield, Connecticut on Apr. 5, 1700.

    _________________________________________________

He came from Dedham, Co.Essex to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 (based on his election as Watertown selectman on Nov 25,1635). From Watertown, he removed to Wethersfield by 1638, and, finally, New Haven in 1640. He died between 29 October 1640 and May 1641 (the date of the inventory of his estate).

He married, about 1598, Grace Makin. She was a daughter of Tobias Makin and Katherine (Westbrome) Makin of Fingringhoe, Co.Essex. She was living on June 14,1643 (when she was mentioned in the will of her husband's uncle Samuel Sherman. She was mentioned earlier, on Feb 7,1620/1, in the will of her brother Tobias Makin Jr.). NOTE: Edmund's wife was not Joan Makin as postulated in a 1920 Sherman Genealogy. (NEHGR Vol 168 [Jan 2014], p.18, and Great Migration, Volume VI (2009), pp.282ff.)

Children: Edmund Sherman Jr, Ann Sherman, Joan Sherman Wight, Hester Sherman Ward, Richard Sherman, Bezaleel Sherman, John Sherman, Frace Sherman Livermore, Samuel Sherman, and, possibly, a "youngest daughter", whose name is not known.

    *****************************************************

In her will of 2 September 1625, "Ann Anger," sister of this Edmund Sherman, and wife of John Anger, included bequests to "my brothers Edmund Sherman & Richard Sherman" and to "Ann Sherman and Jone Sherman daughters of my brother Edmund."

In his will of 14 June 1643, "Samuel Sherman of Dedham in the County of Essex, clothier, brother of this Edmund Sherman, included bequests to "my loving sister Sherman, Edmond's widow twenty shillings, and to her daughters Grace and Ester Ward and to her youngest daughter to either of them twenty shillings." This "youngest daughter," otherwise undocumented, would probably have been born in that period beginning in late 1620 when there is a large gap in the record of baptisms in Dedham, Essex.

Pope thought that the Edmund Sherman who created the Watertown records was the son of this immigrant, and Savage wasn't sure. The crucial reason for believing that the Watertown man was the father rather than the son may be found in the 1637 grants of the Beaverbrook Plowland and Remote Meadow lots. In each case Edmund Sherman received six acres, which should represent a household of six. The son Edmund was not known to have been married at this time and should not have had six persons in his household. The older Edmund, however, had with him his wife and his four younger children: John, Samuel, Grace and the (unnamed) youngest daughter. (Grace probably married John Livermore very close to the date of the Remote Meadows grant.) There is no record to show that the younger Edmund Sherman was ever in New England. The early Watertown records of landholding and officeholding pertain to the father. Later New England records, which certainly pertain to the son, all place him in England, in 1640, 1648 and 1663, and the younger Edmund Sherman died in Dedham, Co.Essex between Apr 11,1673 and May 28,1673.

Henry Sherman (1546-1610) was a Clothier and lived and worked in "Sherman's Hall", which is in Dedham, Essex, England. His father bequethed to him "my Shearman's crafte" and added, "I give to Henry Shearman, my son, all the household which is in his house which he hath already". Thus it seems he was already living and working in "Shearman Hall". And there he presumably lived and worked throughout his life. At age 23 he married Susan Lawrnece and they produced seven sons and four daughters. The fifth son, John, was the ancestor of Hon. Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence for Connecticut. Henry and his wife died within two weeks of one another, perhaps of the same malady. and their wills were probated on the same day, September 12, 1618. Both are buried at Dedham, England

The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 166 (October 2012):245-58 (Part 1), "The Earliest Shermans of Dedham, Essex, and Their Wives," "Part I: Henry Sherman the Elder and His Wives," by Michael Johnson Wood
GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY HENRY SHERMAN[64] was born about 1512,[65] perhaps in Essex. He settled in Dedham, Essex about 1534, and late in life in Colchester, Essex, about 1584. He died between 26 February 1589/90 and 25 July 1590 (dates of codicil and probate), probably in Colchester. His first wife, whom he married about 1539, was perhaps A DAUGHTER OF ROBERT PERPOYNT of Dedham. She was probably identical with AGNES, wife of Henry Sherman the elder, who was buried in Dedham 14 October 1580. He married next in Dedham 5 June 1581, MARION (___) (SMYTHE) WILSON, widow of Thomas Smythe of Dedham, then of Edmund Wilson of St. Leonard’s, Colchester, whom she had married in Dedham 5 April 1563 . She was perhaps "Mrs Sherman" buried at St. James, Colchester, 4 August 1584. Henry married last MARGERY ___, who was living when he made his will. As Henry Shearman the elder, of Colchester, Essex, he left a will dated 20 January 1589/90, with a codicil dated 26 February 1589/90, proved in London 25 July 1590.[66] The will named son Henry Shearman and his children Henry, Samuel, Daniel, John, Ezechiell, Phebe, Nathaniel, and Anne Shearman; son Edmonde Shearman and his children Edmonde, Richard, Bezaliell, Anne, and Sara Shearman (all under age; sons under 22, daughters under 21), son-in-law William Petfield and his children Richard, Susan, and Elizabeth Petfield (all under age); wife Margerye; son Robert; Jane and Anne Shearman, underage daughters of Robert [evidently the testator’s son Robert]; daughter Judith Petfield; son-in-law Nicholas Fynce; the wives of sons Edmond, Henry, and Robert; the poor of All Hallows [i.e., All Saints, Colchester]; and the poor of Dedham and the free school of Dedham (the testator asked to be buried in Dedham). Executors were to be sons Henry and Edmond. Children of Henry Sherman and his first wife (if Agnes was his second wife, she could have been the mother of at least one of the youngest children): i. ALICE SHERMAN, b. say 1540; bur. Dedham 20 Oct. 1580 as Alice, wife of Nicholas Fince; m. ca. 1562, as his first wife, NICHOLAS FINCE, b. after 25 Aug. 1532 (date of his father’s will), bur. Dedham 28 Feb. 1593/4, son of John and Ellen (___) Fince of Ardleigh, Essex.[67] Nicholas and Alice had seven children baptized in Dedham from 1562/3 to 1578. The burials of five in infancy or childhood are recorded there, and the other two children, Judith and Alice, may have died young also as they were not named in their grandfather’s will.[68] ii. JUDITH SHERMAN, b. say 1543, bur. Dedham 1 April 1601 as Judith, wife of William Petfield; m. Dedham 27 June 1566 WILLIAM PETFIELD, clothier, living in 1610,[69] probably the elder son of John Petfield of Earls Colne, Essex, clerk, whose undated will proved 17 June 1572, names also a younger son Matthew.[70] William and Judith had nine children baptized in Dedham from 1567 to 1588, the eldest being named Matthew. iii. HENRY SHERMAN, b. say 1545; m. SUSAN Lawrence. See Part 2. iv. EDMUND SHERMAN, b. say 1548; m. (1) ANN PELLETT; (2) ANN CLERE. See Parts 3 and 4. v. John Sherman, b. say 1551,[71] bur, Dedham 16 Oct. 1576, unmarried. He left an undated nuncupative will, probably proved in 1576.[72] The will mentioned brothers-in-law "William Pettfylld" and "Nycollas Fynce"; brother Robert Sharman; "my mother"; and "my father." vi. Thomas SHERMAN, b. say 1555; bur. Dedham 16 March 1563/4. Probably he was the godson of Thomas Butter, as discussed above. vii. ROBERT SHERMAN,[73] bp. Dedham 6 Feb. 1559/60; bur. St. Stephen Coleman Street, London, 14 Jan. l602/3.[74] He was educated at Cambridge University, and became a Fellow of the College of Physicians in 1599[75] He m. (1) Dedham 9 Dec. 1583 BARBARA BROWNE, bp. Dedham 1 April 1561, daughter of Martin and Katherine (Reynolds) (Warner) Browne;[76] (2) shortly after 4 July 1597 BRIDGET JENNEY, daughter of Francis and Margaret (Peyton) Jenney.[77] Robert’s will, dated 10 Jan. 1602/3, proved 20 Jan. 1602/3,[78] names wife Bridget; children Jane, Mary, Anne, and Robert; son Richard. Brother Henry Sherman was to be executor. Notes: 1. Among his many descendants, living and deceased, are several first-rate genealogists and editors of genealogical publications. 2. Bertha L. Note: It is not proven that he is the son of Thomas:
Henry was born in Colchester, County Essex, some thirty miles south of Yaxley. As fourth son of Thomas he received a relatively small share of his wealthy father's estate and thus had to abandon the life of landed proprietor and seek a new method of maintaining and increasing what he had. So he became a clothier. He carried on his trade in Dedham which is in County Essex a few miles north of his birthplace. Being on the River Stour only about 15 miles upstream from the important port of Harwich, Dedham may have been a better shipping point for the goods produced by the Sherman enterprise. The business occupied "Sherman Hall" which stands today as do numerous other ancient buildings of the Essex Clothiers. This Hall -still bearing our family name - is just across the street from Dedham's church and like many other old houses in the town, it boasts a charming Eighteenth Century facade added two centuries after the construction of the original Edifice.
Henry had 5 sons and 2 daughters. Their eldest son, Henry was our ancestor. The second son, Edmund, was the ancestor of General William Tecumseh Sherman. When Henry died in Dedham in 1590 at the age of seventy, his will left 1.20 to his son, Henry, and his armor to his sons, Henry and Robert (who was a physician) while Edmund, ancestor to a general, apparently had to go unarmed- or maybe he already had a full suit of his own. In any event, it is probable that all three sons armed themselves as best they could and rode down to the coast in July of 1588 to help repel the expected invasion by the dreaded Spanish Armada. But, thanks to Howard, Drake, Hawkins and the stormy seas, they had no need to unsheath their swords.

Henry married Agnes BUTTER about 1539 in Dedham, Essex, England. Agnes (daughter of Thomas BUTLER and Joane) was born in 1521 in England; died in 1580 in England; was buried on 14 Oct 1580 in Dedham, Essex, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
